Global Talent Visas

The Global Talent Visa: Your Pathway to Excellence in the UK
At Amicis Legal Services Ltd, we are proud to support talented and promising individuals seeking to work in the UK through the Global Talent Visa. This visa category, introduced in February 2020 to replace the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa, aims to attract the best and brightest talents in specific sectors to contribute their expertise and skills in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria and Endorsement Process

Applicants for the Global Talent Visa can apply under two main categories: ‘talent’ or ‘promise.’ Those applying as ‘talent’ must demonstrate recognition as an industry leader in their field, while those applying as ‘promise’ must show the potential for future recognition as ‘talent.’

To be considered for the Global Talent Visa, applicants typically need endorsement from one of the following six endorsing bodies authorized by the UK Home Office:

  • The Royal Society
  • British Academy
  • Royal Academy of Engineering
  • Tech Nation
  • Arts Council England
  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

The application process involves two stages:

  • Applying for endorsement from a relevant institution.
  • Submitting a Home Office application for permission to enter or stay in the UK within three months of receiving an endorsement.

Endorsement Process for Different Fields

Depending on the applicant’s field of expertise, the endorsing bodies differ:

  • For science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, humanities, academic, and research roles:
The British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society, or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will assess your application.
  • For non-academic fields of arts and culture and digital technology:
Arts Council England or Tech Nation will handle endorsement, each following its own criteria.

Four Qualification Routes for the Global Talent Visa

  • Peer Reviews: Requires endorsement from an approved endorsing body.
  • Senior Appointments: Granted by British universities, educational and research institutes, and endorsed by the same bodies as peer reviews.
  • Fellowships: Gained at research institutes or approved higher education facilities.
  • Endorsed Funding: Assessed by UKRI and offers a fast track to settlement.
  • The British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society, or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will assess your application.
  • For non-academic fields of arts and culture and digital technology: Arts Council England or Tech Nation will handle endorsement, each following its own criteria.

The Path to Settled Status and British Citizenship

If endorsement is granted, the final immigration decision lies with the Home Office. Subsequently, you can apply for settled status after just five years of working in science, engineering, humanities, or medicine. After holding settled status for one year, you may apply for Naturalization and become a British citizen.

Benefits for Dependents and Exemptions

Global Talent Visa holders can bring their dependents and immediate family members to the UK, granting them full access to education and work opportunities. Additionally, this visa scheme allows exemptions from the absence rule, enabling visa holders to travel abroad for research purposes without impacting settlement applications.
